THE BISHOP OF BRISTOL’S AMENDMENT WAS DISCUSSED ON WEDNESDAY 24 MAY. The record of the debate is here (Hansard, column 125GC, just before 5.00pm). The Government assured the House that ‘we in the department are considering this issue carefully and will reflect on the comments made during this debate’ and ‘have had many talks with the National Association of Local Councils and interested churches, and we will continue to do so as we move to Report’.
WORDING OF AMENDMENTS: The Bill and its amendments can be found on this page (click on ‘Bill (5)’, then ‘HL Bill 84 as brought from Commons’) and the amendments marshalled into the correct order for debate on thesame page (click on ‘Amendment Paper’, then on ‘HL Bill 84-I Marshalled list for Committee’). The relevant NALC amendment (no. 163) proposes a new clause after clause 70 of the Bill, and the Bishop of Bristol’s amendment (no. 485) proposes a new clause after clause 214 of the Bill.

COMMITTEE DISCUSSION – NOTES ON PROGRESS The House of Lords has been discussing amendments to the Bill in Committee (for latest see dates). The amendments are taken in logical order according to the clause of the Bill they are amending, clustering related amendments; in practice, that means taking them more or less in numerical order, reaching ahead for related amendments where helpful. Each day on which the House discusses the bill, a target highest amendment number is set. The House will not go beyond that number, and often does not reach it. If the Bill is being discussed that day, then the target number for a day can be found at the beginning of that day at https://www.lordswhips.org.uk/todays-lists (scroll down).
